Symantec, Trendmicro & McAfee AV software expose serious threat of using outdated antivirus
The other day it was announced that 3 of the major and antivirus software vendors, Symantec, Trendmicro & McAfee, which make up a significant share of the AV market and are in use on hundreds of millions of machines worldwide, had been breached by Russian hackers.
What this breach shows is what I’ve have been saying for years, that relying on dated traditional antivirus is no match for today’s hackers who are h*** bent on breaching your network and taking advantage of the serious security flaws these dated packages leave open.
As a security-focused CEO, our companies, Absolute Logic and CyberGuard360 take cyber security seriously, in fact CyberGuard360 was born because of the significant gap in security most MSPs leave open either for lack of knowledge of the threat landscape or product vulnerabilities, or because they view the enhanced protections as nice-to-have‘s. In both companies we’re a Sophos shop; with their Advanced Endpoint Protection and next-generation Intercept X none of our clients or partners have suffered a breach. And while no business, enterprise or organization can be 100% protected, even the Department of Defense gets hacked, when you rely on older technologies, outdated services and organizations that don’t take cyber security seriously, you are leaving a welcome mat in front of your company inviting hackers to walk through the front door.
2018 may have been the year of the data breach, but cyber-criminals are leveraging advanced techniques to thwart traditional lines of defense. 2019 may come to be known as the year that your protection turns against you.
